National Honor Society Official Website

Membership in the local chapter is an honor bestowed upon a student. Selection for membership is by a Faculty Council and is based on outstanding scholarship, character, leadership, and service. Once selected, members have the responsibility to continue to demonstrate these qualities.

Scholarship

All students must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.6 or above (no rounding) after the end of their sophomore or junior academic year in order to be eligible. Invitations are sent out each fall to the people who have the appropriate GPA.

Character

To fulfill the character requirement a candidate should demonstrate on a consistent basis maturity, sensitivity, high ethical/moral values, good sportsmanship (if appropriate), and above all--honesty in all situations. Each candidate should be a role model for other students in his daily conduct and attitude.

Service

Generally, service activities are those that are done for or on behalf of others (not including family members) for which no compensation (monetary or otherwise) has been given. Three service activities are required on the application.

Leadership

To have exhibited leadership, students must have demonstrated that they have been elected to some position of authority in a club, organization and/or activity; or have demonstrated that they have taken the initiative to lead others, to direct an activity or program, to innovate some idea or concept either in school or with the community since the start of the freshman year.

Interview

Candidates may be asked to participate in an interview with the Faculty Council before a final selection is made.

Vote

The entire Faculty Council must vote favorably on the individual's eligibility.
